The Gardeners’ Arms Reopens (Again)

It’s nice to see people back in the gardens of The Gardeners’ Arms, in Emmer Green. They reopened at 5pm today (29th July), doing a special offer on food – no use to me as my tea was already on, but a good idea. I popped in for a quick half – the Speckled Hen isn’t ready this evening, but the IPA was as good as Greene King IPA gets (and better than it usually is). For 5:30 on a Thursday evening they had a decent number in, not packed by any means but nice to see after the pub has been so quiet for so long.

Their food menu is not over-ambitious, but looks reasonable: Thai curry, chilli, child-friendly standards like bangers and mash or scampi and chips, lots of pizzas, and various snacks. I think there’s something there for the whole of my family – who tend to like different things, which can be a problem – so I guess we’ll need to pop over to try them out in the next few days.

If you live in that part of Caversham/Emmer Green, why not pop over yourself and give them a go.

The couple of times I've been past the GA, it's had a large number of not-so-appealing clientele outside. Never been tempted to go in!

I loved the Gardeners Arms when we lived in Caversham, OH played darts for them and it was great pub, with a nice atmosphere, mind you that was thirty years ago !

The Gardeners used to be run by an ex employee of ours, a chap by the name of Gordon Griffin and we used to have the firm's Christams Parties over there in the Skittle Alley.
Gordon was a chap who lnew how to look after humself and he would have no nonsence from anyone.

I was speaking with the owners a couple of days ago. The plan is to have a 'toby' type eating establishment. The new owners are well experienced in the business, so lets hope the place does take off. Will need lots of marketing, in and out of Caversham.

Good luck to them! It's not a pub I know, but if it is independent and doing its best to make a go of things then I hope they do well!

Eaten by the Highdown kids on their way home.

My experience echoes Chris', though in fairness I've only visited the pub once, earlier this year. Dreary and largely deserted inside. Hopefully the refurb will improve things - I may pay it another visit at some point.
