Thank you Les, thank you for the welcome, and yes I was a bit apprehensive in posting!
As to contributing, I think you can expect to see more of me here! I actually live in Newbury, I’ve tried joining the Newbury forum, but I find it very slow, very little happening, a lot of people with their “own agendas” a bit like when I went to the West Berkshire Business Club Meeting three or four years ago, I stood around for half an hour like a lemon, everyone in their little clicks, probably talking about why the membership was dropping! I made my excuses and left as soon as I could.

I like the look of your forum here, and I am in need of picking up some “local Reading knowledge” to help me with my business interests here, so there is potential for a two way street, I can put in my two penny’s worth, and hopefully gain an insight into the local Mafia.

Hello Tony and welcome :)

Good to have you here; I know how you felt at that meeting, rather like I found when I first went with a business colleague to the Chamber of Commerce meeting - tried one more time, and then didn't....... found other ways of - as you put it, gaining an insight .... I think dependent on what your business interests are (and I'm not asking!) things have a way of falling into place.

Anyway enjoy browsing and contributing here :)

Tony, it might be hard for you to get away from the shop at lunchtime, but if you come along to promote Quids In at our weekly lunchtime BNI meeting in town, you'll be made to feel very much part of the "click", I assure you.

Take a look at the Facebook: BNI Oracle, Reading page or just contact me via the forum and we'd be very glad to see you - just bring along a tenner for lunch at the Strada and absolutely no strings attached.
Need more business?
I'm one of a group of local business people who meet every week for lunch in Reading between 12.15pm and 1.45pm on Wednesdays. Our aim is simple: to refer new business to people we know, like and trust. If you're in business in the town and you'd like to come along and meet us, please drop me a line via the forum or visit blog.inframes.com.

Sports chain Decathlon is to open in Forbury retail park in October, taking over the former JJB and Benson Beds stores. It's a really good store and good value. I think it will be big competition for places like Carters on ski/outdoor gear however.

Mrs Risotto is an ardent Decathlon fan and so is very pleased with this news. We used to regularly visit their stores in Spain when on holiday to stock up on reasonably prices, good quality gear. They only have a handful of UK stores at the moment, the next nearest at Surrey Quays in London which she visits occasionally - a bit of a trek if you're just after a few things.

I am glad someone is taking over those shops - they have been empty and forlorn for far too long.

Hey,
Today I went to the Forbury Retail Park after ages and noticed that there is a shop called Home Sense there.

I ventured in for a browse, delighted to find that this is basically all the home stuff that TK Maxx does spread across 2 vast floors! :dancepepper: :clap2:

Has this been here long?

The new Cafe/Produce store next to the church on Chain St looks like it's getting close to opening. The scaffolding is down and signs are up.

New openings...

Postby barbie » 21 Aug 2010 21:13

Does anyone know what's happening on the Riverside? There seems to be some development of one of the old Brannigan's units?

Also, anyone know what the new brasserie place is next to St Mary's?

New store Bill's 'looks amazing'

By David Millward
August 13, 2010

Curious shoppers filed into Bill’s Café and Produce Store when it opened this week. St Mary’s Church House, in Chain Street, had been boarded up for weeks while the former tourism and travel office was transformed. But the wraps came off this week and the fashionable café/indoor market opened for business on Wednesday .....

The unit going into the old Brannigan's spot is going to be a branch of Tampopo http://www.tampopo.co.uk/
Sounds quite good and has good reviews for their other branches.

Yummy - menus look good. And competition for Wagamamas won't be a bad thing.

I wait with baited breath to see whether this place turns into a yummy mummy meeting place/creche like all the other joints in the Oracle.

Who takes their toddlers into a bar? My parents wouldn't have dreamed of doing it!
