That’s made me think…. I’m not sure if it’s an urban legend or fact - did alkies drink meths? Not an urban legend, though, according to the no of reports on the internet it seems particularly prevalent in new Zealand for some reason. Never drunk it , but have tasted Bittrex , which is now the bitte...

Most Yorkshire people are honest, blunt and speak their mind. You can usually trust them even if you disagree. Her essence came from a long distance from there.

The Elan aquaduct (including construction of dams at the Wales end) was constructed at the beginning of the 20th century to carry water 73 miles to Birmingham . Surely today , with modern machinery a similar but longer pipeline should be no problem

Re: Chat Thread

There is already the essence of a pipeline. It's called the canal system. This has been suggested a number of times, transporting water from ,say northumberland, to the south. I suggested that this solution was available (not my idea, just from reading suggestions) as group spokesman in a contact gr...

Yes lots of stones. This would be about 1946-7 I would think . Then there were still either at Wittering or Bracklesham lots of concrete structures built for defensive purposes early in the war. I assume they are no longer there.

I think there has definitely been a tendency for people to take things a bit too seriously nowadays, but with regard to two items, stink bombs and itching powder, I think there is good reason to object to them. Itching powder might do serious harm to someone with , say, eczema, while stink bombs mig...

The statements you quote from the 1950s were from politicians or their lackeys who would say anything to get the nuclear material for their bombs . About as accurate, honest, reliable and dependable as those more recently on Brexit, and, as then, aimed at maintaining their own feelings of self impor...

Re: Merchants Phone 129 Caversham road

The firm was formed oroginally as J Milsom & Son. Joseph Milsom was well known as a councillor and later alderman and was on various good works commitees. The firm (william Griffith & Joseph Milsom trading together went into receivership in 1914, but presumably was reborn. Around 1909 Joseph...

The Telephone number information comes from the Ancestry site. The 1899 information come from a download of Kellys 1899 directory for Berkshire that I have.

The earliest mention of Milsom's in the Ancestry telephone directories at Brittania wharf , Caversham Road is in 1934., and it is a 4 figure number. They are shown at that address in the 1899 Kellys

I can see a serious shakeup in the NHS. Not in the delivery of patient care - at least not at first - but in the tier upon tier upon tier of management, Consultants, woke roles and spending money on non-clinical ‘nice to have but not crucial’ positions. I’ve always thought that if you have to expla...

Re: The new PRIME MINISTER…?

Mick
The discussion started on non-waste of resources (non-attended appointments). I am quite happy for charges to be made which arise from a plain "devil may care " attitude, though it is doubtful if it would be possible to distinguish these cases from genuine reasons for non-attendance.

I agree it is amazing what people throw away. Some might be very useful to others. Far better to put it on the recycle site so that others might have use of it. Re: The new PRIME MINISTER…?

I don’t disagree with a penalty for missed appointments but £10 is pathetic. Given the admin involved, it will cost more than it raises and also impacts the less well off. Better some kind of points system to penalise “frequent flyers” who miss appointments by delaying any bookable slots. They coul...

Not just that, but most of the rest of the news seems to be the Commonwealth games. I see stripping off their top seems to have spread to the woman's game. I suppose the next thing will be sports pubs displaying signed woman's bras from members of the team
