Re: What are we watching?
Mrs H has taken to watching Police Interceptors on 5 Action. To say it creates a negative impression of the North-East of England would be an understatement! I am sure that hundreds of hours of filming is discarded for every 5 minutes shown, but it really does seem that the teenage population of Le...

I have friends who live at East Wittering/Bracklesham. They have always regarded the queues trying to get to West Wittering with a certain amount of amusement.

It is originally Japanese, caled Maneki-Neki. It is not waving, it is beckoning - or some people say the cat is washing its face.
If you believe it can bring you luck, keep it.
If you are a rational person, bin it.

It was originally broadcast on BBC1 (so in black and white) on Boxing Day, 1967. BBC2 broadcast it (in colour) on 5 January, 1968, so that would be the one you watched, Avis. Isn't it strange how some memories last for decades? 54 years - wow!. I can remember us all sitting on sofas, chairs, window...

I remember a whole gang of us going to a friend's house - can't remember his name now, but his dad was a film and television producer - to watch "Magical Mystery Tour" on their colour television. That would have been in 1968, I think.

Re: Proposals to revitalise The Oracle and regenerate the eastern end of the centre
It has been so long since I went into the centre of Reading that I can't work out in my head where all these things are. It will be interesting to see the Zoom presentation. Not that it will matter that much to me in the end, as I won't be going there

I knew nothing about it. I don't have a television, don't buy newspapers. I have an subscription to an online press service which covers most newspapers, but I only read some sections.

Re: The etiquette of table manners?
As a left hander, knife and fork as per table setting. Would find it odd the other way. Spoons always goes to the left, probably because restaurants rarely offer a fork for dessert these days , which annoys me as I chase the food around the plate. But a knife on its own goes in the left. That's eas...

Two quite breezy days this weekend - gave me the chance to get all the windows, and the garden door, open to blow the last of the heat away. It did require a quick hunt for my stock of doorstops, though! And I had to apologise to the Ocado delivery guy when the front door slammed in his face as he w...

I had snails from time to time when I was working in Strasbourg. Frogs legs on one occasion, too. And horsemeat in Luxembourg. And oysters in Jersey. All quite nice, but not at the top of my list.

Just think, if people hadn't experimented with food, had never said "what if ....", had never had imagination or flights of fancy - we would never have had chocolate cake.

I shut my windows too. The air blowing in is hotter than the internal temperature. I open them as soon as the outside temp. drops, usually early evening. I think it depends a lot on the aspect of your house. The back of my house is in full sun morning and afternoon, so it makes sense to shut the su...

Given that, by reading various health related threads on here, this forum tends to reflect the demographic that would be most severely affected. Anyone who says “we wer...

Younger son and Mrs H both tested positive for Covid last night. Slightly odd as we have hardly seen the youngster in the last week. I guess it's just a matter of time before I succumb. Postcodes. On the main roads out of Caversham, RG4 becomes RG9 on the Henley road, just by the sharp left hand bend (see the map); RG4 becomes RG9 on the B481 going up the hill out of Sonning Common, and RG4 becomes RG8 on the A4074 between Cane End and the turnoff for Goring. RG9 covers chunks of S...
